Belgrade ARTE Gallery presents the exhibition HOMAGE TO VLADIMIR VELIČKOVIĆ on the occasion of marking one year since the author’s death. The exhibition is set in two exhibition spaces of the ARTE Gallery – Kralja Milana 3 and Andrićev venac 12. Due to the current situation, there was no official opening, and the exhibition will be open until mid-October.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with reproductions and texts by the leading names of recent art criticism and the art scene, Irina Subotić, Ljiljana Ćinkul and Mrđan Bajić. The works, from private collections, which the audience will have the opportunity to see, are an overview of the works of Vladimir Veličković in the period between the 1960s and 1970s. More than 35 works performed in the techniques of oil on canvas, marufle ink and graphics, are at the same time a display of tragedy and hope from which life is woven.

The themes and motives that can be seen on this occasion, very clearly show the key the phases of Veličković’s work are a reflection of the typicalities associated with him. What is extremely symptomatic of Veličković’s work refers to the large format itself the author characterizes it as his “pain”. On this occasion, we single out large-format works, self-portrait Chien No. 23 – variations on the theme of self-portraits, from 1972, then the triptych Three Phases of the Leap from 1975, and a drawing, for that medium, of a monumental format, which was performed in ink

Veličković’s (artistic) mission and thought, which is clearly visible in every square centimetre of the canvas, refers to man’s destiny. Veličković demonstrates his ability to master large formats by finding optimal solutions, which are a skilful combination and clear distinction of the opposition pairs interior – intimacy and exterior – apocalyptic landscape. He actively acts and asks questions – what is a man’s birth, what is his life and what is his death, with the ubiquitous emphasis on violence and aggression that “squats” in every man as one of his essential characteristics. That weight, attached to the leg of each individual, represents a constant burden and destiny that does not bypass us.

The working hours of the ARTE Gallery (Kralja Milana 3, Andrićev venac 12) are from Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 8 pm, on Sundays from 10 am to 6 pm.
