Ljubica Cuca Sokić (Bitolj, 1914 – Belgrade, 2009)

Ljubica Cuca Sokić attended a gymnasium in Belgrade, where her drawing professor was Zora Petrović. Later she enrolled into the Art School of Belgrade in 1930, where she first studied under the tutorage of Beta Vukanović i Ljuba Ivanović, upon graduating she attended a course under Ivan Radović from 1936. She lived and studied in Paris from 1936 until 1939. Her first solo exhibition was in Belgrade upon returning from Paris in 1939. She was one of the founders of The Ten group in 1940. In the period between 1948 and 1972, she worked as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade.

She was appointed as an associate member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1968 and became a regular member in 1978. She was one of the founders of the Heritage House, and within this institution in Belgrade she left her own legacy consisting of 27 representational works that originated between 1965 and 1985. She has exhibited at home and abroad in many solo and group exhibitions. She won many prizes, including the painting prize at the first October salon in 1960, the Artists’ association of Serbia’s Golden pallet in 1962, the Seventh of July award in 1972, the city of Belgrade’s October award in 1978, Vuk’s award in 1993, she was also awarded the Politika award from the Vladislav Ribnikar Foundation for the retrospective exhibition at the gallery of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1996.
